    pianoforte. Frequencies are measured on a horizontal scale as marked, thus being the same for all seven layers. In each layer, the vertical line marked i occurs at the Fig. 35. The distribution of harmonics and of continuous sound in a modern grand pianoforte played mf. frequency of the note sounded, while 2, 3, etc., occur at the frequencies of the second, third, etc., harmonics of these notes. Thus these vertical lines mark the positions of the various harmonics of the note sounded.
