About this work

Description

In February 1997, NCT Council established a Consultation Steering Group on Commercial Sponsorship and Breastfeeding Promotion (CSG) to explore whether NCT should commercial sponsorship in light of the WHO Code on the marketing of breastmilk substitutes. The work was commissioned following a dispute among NCT members concerning the acceptance of sponsorship from Sainsbury's supermarket, which sold its own brand of formula milk. The study was based on a questionnaire posted to specialist workers and a range of branch workers to gauge their views on the issues surrounding breastfeeding promotion and commercial sponsorship.

The report was produced and presented to the Council of Trustees on 22 October 1997. However, Council argued that the report went beyond its remit, and decided to discuss the report again at a later meeting in November 1997. The report of the Consultation Steering Group resulted in new policies on Advertising and Commercial Sponsorship, and the development of a Baby Feeding Policy.
