Lettering

Battle of Omdurman, Friday, September 2, 1898. (In order that the positions of the different regiments may be readily distinguished, the home uniforms have been retained)... A. Sutherland 98. Lettering continues: "The battle story told in headlines: The great battle of Omdurman. Reconquest of the Soudan. Sir Herbert Kitchener's brilliant victory. Gordon's cruel death avenged. The Khalifa's army completely annihilated. The sacred city of the Dervishes captured. A horrid system of government overthrown. Mahdism fallen for ever. Troops handled with amazing ability. The highest gift of generalship. Splendid courage and discipline of British, Soudanese and Egyptian troops. A second Balaclava charge. Unparalleled savage daring and calm heroism. Mowed down by modern weapons of war. Lives purposely thrown away. 10,000 killed; 16,000 wounded.; 4,000 prisoners. The way cleared for civilization."
