    branes anaemic, labial breathing. Blood-stained discharge from the nostrils, pulse very feeble and accelerated. On auscultation bron¬ chial rales were perceptible, and there was a painful cough accompanied by haemoptysis. Tuberculosis was suspected, but the tuberculin test gave negative results. The animal died on October 30. On post-mortem examination a quantity of blood was found in the thoracic cavity and there were evidences of a dry pleurisy, the pulmonary lobes being adherent to the diaphragm. The upper portion of the right pulmonary lobe was traversed from above to below, and from behind to in front, by an ear of wheat which had caused a pulmonary rupture covered with clots of blood. On the anterior face of the diaphragm a small wound, which corre¬ sponded on its exposed face to an adhesion of the stomach, was visible, and it was assumed that the origin of the malady was as follows— The dog in his track across a field swallowed a whole ear of wheat; the violent movements made during vomition caused this ear to become implanted on the wall of the stomach and to penetrate it. From there it reached the wall of the diaphragm, causing a fistulous wound, which produced an adhesion between the stomach and the diaphragm, followed by dry diaphragmatic pleurisy. The pul¬ monary lobes being fixed by new formation tissue to the diaphragm from the posterior face had become bound down in such a way that the ear of wheat had passed from below to above, producing a wound large enough to cause both hsemothorax and pneumothorax Tumours of the Chest Wall. The chest wall, in common with other parts of the body surfaces, is apt to be the site of tumour growths, and at times these grow to enormous size, as shown in Figs. 47 and 124. The patient (Fig. 123) was an adult fox-terrier, male, with a huge tumour hanging from a little to the right of the middle line in the pectoral region. The surface was bosselated and almost warty in appearance; contact with the ground had caused a few suppurating sores, but otherwise the external surface was intact, and the dog did not seem in pain. Chloroform was administered, and the growth, when excised, weighed about two and a half pounds.1 Treatment is as already described (p. 78). 1 R. Gr.
