About this work

Description

The fragments of the vase had been excavated by Gavin Hamilton at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli in 1771, were bought by Sir William Hamilton, restored by him and sold to his nephew, the 2nd Earl of Warwick, after which it was known as the "Warwick Vase": Ingamells, loc. cit.

Lettering

A sua eccellenza il sig cav Hamilton, ministro plenipotenziario della M.ta di Giorgio III re della Gran Bretagna presso all M.ta di Ferdinado IV re delle due Sicilie, amatore delle belle arti. Veduta di prospettiva di un antico vaso di marmo di gran mole, ritrovato l'anno 1770, nell'escavare, e dissecare il lago detto Pantanello ... L'iscrizione, che si legge nel suo moderno piedestallo parimente di marmo indica il personaggio, che si èpreso la cura di far ristaurare questo antico monumento. Cav. Piranesi f.
