Biographical note

Leonhard Euler was a mathematician, born in Switzerland in 1707; he spent much of his career in Russia, where in 1766 he became blind and eventually died in 1783 of apoplexy. He wrote on a wide variety of mathematical topics, including pure mathematical analytics, algebra, the theory of equations, analytical geometry and calculus, and was also well-known for his work on physics, the fundamental principles of mathematical philosophy, optics and astronomy.
