About this work

Description

Alison Lapper revisits Chailey Heritage Craft Schoool and Hospital where she was brought up as a young child, born with congenital phocomelia which left her with very shortened arms and legs. Other people who were children at Chailey also talk about their experiences there. These include: Louise Medus, Stephen Trinkwon, Sharon O'Leary and Stephen Simmonds. Archive photographs of Chailey Heritage are shown. The participants discuss how difficult it was to wear artificial limbs which Chailey were very keen on. Lapper describes her artwork and the motivations behind it. Perhaps most poignant are the participant's stories about how they found the world outside Chailey when they had to leave in their teens.
