Lettering

Aesculapius. A statue placed in the grand hall of the inquisition directly over the black hole. ... Gay-again invent & c. Lettering continues. The quotation within it is a parody of "Shine out, fair sun, till I have bought a glass, That I may see my shadow as I pass" in Richard III by Shakespeare (act I, scene 2)

According to the lettering, the pose is based on the sculpture of Eloquence, a standing figure in the lower left part of the monument to John, 2nd Duke of Argyll, by L.F. Roubiliac in Westminster Abbey, 1745-1749, or the terracotta model for it in the Victoria and Albert Museum
