Lettering

The view of the hospital for the reception of exposed and deserted young children ... Lettering continues: "erected in pursuance of a royal charter granted by his most sacred majesty King George the IId. dated the 17th day of October 1739 is most humbly dedicated to the governors & guardians of the said hospital - by their most obedient hum.bl servant Jeremiah Robinson. Theodore Jacobson Ar. inv. Jeremiah Robinson delin. Hen. Roberts scul. The foundation of this hospital was laid the 16th of Septembr. 1742 & was erected & is supported by the voluntary contributions and legacys of well dispos'd persons - Between 5 & 600 children have already been admitted into it & it is to be hoped this hospital will soon be a receptacle for all such poor deserted children as shall be brought to it. The good consequences which will derive to this nation by preserving the lives of many helpless infants & educating them in such a manner as to make them useful members of the community being so very apparent has induced many noblemen, gentlemen, ladies & others to be generous contributors to this charity. And his majesty out of his Royal Bounty has lately given ye sum of 2000 pounds towards promoting & supporting thereof. The chapel is now erecting by contributions given for that particular purpose"
