About this work

Description

Woodcut illustrating the 17th century Chinese medical text Yangyi daquan (Great Compendium of The Medicine of Sores) Gu Shicheng, from an edition published in 1901 (27th year of the Guangxu reign period of the Qing dynasty). The illustration shows the disease location for erfeng du (ear wind poisoning). This condition would be described in current medical terms to suppurative otitis media. The symptoms are a discharge of red-stained pus from the ear canal, accompanied by tinnitus, impaired hearing, etc. A patient is depicted holding a vase of flowers next to his left ear. Three acu-moxa locations are marked in front of the ear: ermen (Ear Portal), tinggong (Palace of Hearing) and tinghui (Meeting of Hearing).
