About this work

Description

Chick embryo showing the neural tube and developing somites. Somites (pink) are discreet bundles of tissue that form from mesoderm in an anterior (left) to posterior (right) direction. They go on to give rise to the vertebrae, muscles and dermis. The neural tube (centre) will develop into the spinal cord.
