    DESCRIPTION OF THE ISLAND. and Gwyr Mon, and at the Roman invasion, by adding the letter a, in conformity with the Latin idiom, we find it called Mona. This alteration has caused much dispute among historians, many of whom suppose it to be one of the three primary Isles, men- tioned in the Triads, which were Orkney (then undivided) Manaw, and Wight (Chwith) traces of an Isthmus being still visible at Porthaethwy Ferry, where this insulated tract of country originally joined the main land. I learn from the Caer- wys MSS.* that owing to a line of rocks near Craig y Ddinas, jutting out from each side, forming a most dangerous passage during the ebb and flow of the tide, by the meeting of two strong currents, this Ferry was originally called Porthcaeth-wy. A geological map of the Island was published a few years ago, by Mr. Henslow of Cambridge, who makes its length from east to west, i. e. Penmon to Caer-gybi (Holyhead) to be thirty miles, its breadth, measuring from Llanelian in the north to Llanddwyn in the south, twenty-six, and its circumference about ninety miles. The Irish mail-road, and the roads connecting the prin- cipal towns and places of note, are in good repair. Lord Bulkeley, a few years before his death, and at his own expence, formed a new road along the beautiful bank of the Menai, from Bangor Ferry to Beaumaris. The lands on the sea-coast,f more especially to the western side, where the ground inclines to a t Concerning the wonders of the Isle of Mona.—The first wonder, is a shore without a sea.— The second, is a mountain which turns round three times in a year.—The third is a ford, the water whereof ebbs and flows as the sea does, with the tide.—The fourth is a stone, which walks during the night, in the valley of Eithein, and, when formerly thrown into the whirlpool Carevus, which is in the middle of the sea, called “ Mene,” it was on the morrow found on the side of the aforesaid valley.
