    INTRODUCTION. In the year 1817, wishing to know the state of surgery at Paris, I made a journey to that city, was much pleased with the cleanliness of its hos¬ pitals, their medical arrangements, and highly flattered by the friendly reception I received from the majority of the medical practitioners. The intention of my journey being known, Mr. Mo- rand, of Rue St. Honore, an eminent apothecary, sent me a note, saying, if I wished to see the operation of lithotomy, a celebrated surgeon, Dr. Souberbielle, would operate early the next morn- ing, at the Hotel des Invalides, on a gentleman aged sixty-four. Mr. Morand gave me a letter of introduction, addressed to Mr. Rebis, one of the surgeons of that magnificent establishment, who received me with great politeness, and did me the favour to introduce me to Mr. Ivan, surgeon in chief.
