Description

Collection of letters written mainly by French generals of the Napoleonic era, many of them addressed to successive Ministers of War:

1-84 Letters arranged alphabetically by writer A-Q; almost all accompanied by typewritten copies prepared for the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, 1794-1835.

85-101 Letters and documents signed by various generals and statesmen, including Jean Antoine Chaptal, Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, afterwards King of Sweden, and Joachim Murat, afterwards King of Naples. Arranged alphabetically, B-S.

Acquisition note

Items 1-84, and possibly some of the remainder, were from the collection of Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford (1847-1913), sold at Sotheby's in December 1924 and April and December 1925. Stevens' 30 Sept. 1930, lot 305.
