    Three of these District Homes now have special weekly sessions where patients may attend during the ante-natal period for supervision and advice by the resident qualified midwifery staff; and this arrangement is helping to relieve the stress on the Pre-Maternity Centres Clinics to which reference is later made. The number of births in the Hospital was 2,537 and in the Districts 1,318 and it is interesting to note that in this combined total of 3,855 the hospital’s services were profession¬ ally responsible for 13.42 % of the total births recorded in the City. Furthermore, the OUT-PATIENT services at both the Main Hospital and the Extern Pre-Maternity Centres shew substantial increases in patients and attendances compared with the previous year, as follows :— 1946 1945 New Attend- New Attend- Cases ances Cases ances Main Hospital :— Ante-Natal .. Throughout the year a total of ninety-one sessions were held, and 617 babies received professional care and the mothers were also advised. Attendances made were 3,811. Reflection on the foregoing brief summary of the inclusive services provided by the hospital and its various departments for the welfare of mothers and babies will afford some measure of the increasing volume of work undertaken during the year of 1946 and indicate the scope of the Board’s important trust. Equally paramount in their separate spheres are the TEACHING AND TRAINING facilities which the pro¬ fessional staffs perform.
