    Upon the fame principle for which the liberal Literati of all ages have com- mended thofe who hazard a fuppofed claim to the good opinion of the Public ... the principle of beingufeful to fociety and to themfelves ... the Author of this ElTay now hazards that reputation, which has hitherto been confined to the fphere of his praftice : and, as health and lon- gevity are bleflings to which we are per- mitted to lay a claim, he therefore pre- fumes to think that this attempt to ren- der the attainment of thofe bleflings more certain, and as eafy as we can, will be favoured with the indulgence of his Readers, and gratify his ambition to be honoured with their efteem.
