About this work

Description

On the political activities of Charles Callis Western, in particular relating to the Corn Law bill of 1815. Western was ennobled as Baron Western of Rivenhall, Essex in 1834 where he remained popular among the agricultural community and lived in comparative political retirement. The politicians on the left remark as follows: 'What will the Essex calves say when we alter the Corn laws?', Well done western 'break him in' old boy', 'My stars! how he floors the farmers', 'Here comes Western and his hopeful pupil'. The boy in the walking frame claims 'Too young to have political exertions of my own' while the man who pushes him (apparently Western) remarks to his colleagues labelled 'The farmers friends' behind 'Train up a child in the way he should go' as he forces the boy over figures and a book inscribed 'Milton on corn laws'
