About this work

Description

The picture is divided by a tree trunk in the centre: shepherds on the left, the Holy Family on the right. The implications of the unusual composition are discussed at length by DeGrazia Bohlin, loc. cit., where it is identified as one of the last works of Annibale Carracci before he was incapacitated by illness and died young
