Description

Collection of recipes in various hands, mainly pasted in to a ruled ledger book. Most of the recipes are culinary, but there are also several for ink, and one to cure an ague (f. 3).

Biographical note

There is some internal evidence of a Wiltshire provenance: a recipe to make red ink is annotated 'old Mr Davis steward at Longleat 1820' (f. 2v.), a recipe for lemon brandy is headed 'From Mrs Capt. Davis ... Malmesbury' (f. 4) and three recipes on ff. 5-6 are ascribed to Admiral Houlton [presumably John Houlton, of Seagry and Grittleton, d.1791, Rear-Admiral of tthe Blue].
