Illegitimate Births.—Of the 9,588 nett births registered, 938 or 9'8 per cent, were illegitimate as compared with 847 or 8-9 per cent, for the previous year and an average of 706 or 7-8 per cent, for the previous five years. Stillbirths.—The nett number of stillbirths registered during the year was 168, comprising 97 males and 71 females. The rate per thousand of the population was 0-33 as compared with 0-31 for the previous year. Expressed as a percentage of the total births (live and still) the rate was 17 as compared with i-6 for the previous year. Of the 168 stillbirths registered, 32 or 19-0 per cent, were illegitimate. The ratio of registered “still” to registered “live” births was 1 to 57, as compared with 1 to 60 in the previous year. DEATHS The gross number of deaths registered in the city was 6,255, giving a gross death-rate of 12-3, as compared with 13-1 for the previous year. The inward transferable deaths numbered 477 and outward transferable deaths 902, which, after adjustment, leaves a nett total of 5,830 deaths debitable to the city. The corresponding death-rate was 11-5 as compared with 12-3 for the previous year and an average of 12-0 for the previous five years. The provisional death-rate for England and Wales was 11-3. Area Comparability Factor.—The Registrar General supplies an Area Comparability Factor (A.C.F.) and this, when multiplied by the crude death-rate, gives an adjusted death-rate which is compar¬ able with a similarly adjusted death-rate for any other area. An adjusted death-iate makes allowance for any difference in the population structure, by sex and age, from that of England and Wales as a whole. An A.C.F. is also supplied for the adjustment of the crude birth-rate.
