I am not aware of any other important work upon the subject. I have made full use of all the foregoing authors; avoiding only, as much as possible, the etymological conjectures of Bryant, which are considered by some critics as open to objection. In this I have followed rather the taste of the age than my own con- viction ; for these conjectures are at all times ingenious, frequently plausible, and sometimes incontrovertible.
