Description

This short film focus's mainly on the work being done by Leicester Royal Infirmary into diabetes, and at its campaign Screening those at Risk' to raise public awareness of the risks of untreated diabetes. Up to a million people could be suffering from this disease, and the numbers are growing. The programme explains the differences between Type 1 diabetes, which typically is diagnosed in childhood, and Type 2 which becomes more apparent in adulthood, particularly if they are obese. Type 2 Diabetes could affect up to a million people. The complications which arise, when the condition is untreated can be costly and painful. The film shows footage of patients being treated for quite horrific damage to the feet caused by diabetes, in cases where the disease has not been diagnosed in time. The programme also interviews John Peel, who describes his own shock at discovering that he was suffering from diabetes.
