It is said that he was possessed, in the counties of Here¬ ford and Worcestershire, of upwards of 4,000/. per annum; but we are assured his income was as good as 3,000/. Sir John, about the age of twenty-three, married a young lady the daugh¬ ter of a merchant of that city, who gave her a fortune of upwards of 20,000/. But it so happened, some years after, through domestic jars in Sir John’s family, that Sir Robert Jason, a neighbouring baronet, who came pretty frequently to visit Sir John, was suspected of familiarity with Lady Dinely.— Sir John’s suspicions were raised to such a degree, that he forbid Sir Robert his house. The conse¬ quence of this was, that Sir John brought an action in the court of common-pleas, at West¬ minster, for criminal conversation, and laid his damages at 2,000/. The jury gave Sir .John 500/. damages. Sir John, after this, indicted his lady for a con¬ spiracy to take away his life; and by the evidence of a servant-maid, the lady was found guilty, and committed to the King’s-bench prison, for
