    SINGULAR LIFE AND RETIREMENT OF HENRY WELBY, Esq, OP GRUB-STREET, IN CRIPPLEGATE. Benevolence and humanity are the certain characteristics both of a great and generous mind, and while they incite us to promote the felicity of others, they convey no small portion of hap¬ piness to ourselves. The truth of this remark has been verified by the subject of this short sketch in no small degree: and, though his pe¬ culiarities have been great, he has, nevertheless, displayed a sensibility of heart which, evenin this enlightened age^ is rarely tobe met with. To record regularly the incidents of his life, it will be neces¬ sary to commence with his birth, which biographers inform us took place in the year 1552, in a small village in the county of Lincolnshire, where he enjoyed an estate of 1,000/, per annum. Possessing a gay and volatile disposition, this in¬ come was found very inadequate to his mode of life.
