About this work

Also known as

Interrupted dance or the the Eldorado retrovirus.

Description

The interrupted dance of the title refers to an illness which results in paraparesis. This film focuses on the lives of Salomon, Aide, Alvaro and other inhabitants of the Pacific Columbian coast who suffer from an illness which is caused by the retrovirus (HTLV-1) similar to AIDS. The film shows the lives of the sufferers of the illness and demonstrates how they are helping in the scientific research into the retrovirus. These scenes are alternated by animated sequences on the retrovirus. Dr. Vladimir Zainovic, who discovered this epidemic in Colombia, explains the symptoms of the illness. He visits the inhabitants of different villages to take blood samples and to inform them on how to take precautions against catching the virus. The Marquinez family, who are all sufferers of paraparesis, were sent for six months to the USA. Very happy during their stay in America, the Marquines family do not understand what they are suffering from or what is the object of the many examinations, isolationisim and diagnostic tests they underwent. Doctors in the hospital at Tumaco explain that they cannot use the test as it is too expensive.
