About this work

Description

This film dramatises Dr Wilburn Henry Ferguson's anthropological medical research amongst the Jivaro people of South East Ecuador. This region was known as a rich source of medicinal plants (where quinine was discovered) and Dr Ferguson sets out to find out the secret behind shrinking human heads (with the view that this might help combat cancer).

Notes

This film forms part of an additional accession from The British Medical Association library in July 2014.
The film is very scratched and also appeared very warped.
The date of the film, 1957, relates to the publication of a report of the same name. The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry promoted the film and the production was funded by private individuals in Ecuador and the US who supported Ferguson's research. The timing of the shoot appears to correspond with a fund raising trip to the jungle near Sucúa.
