About this work

Description

The pictures of animals in the volumes of Historia animalium are arranged in systematic order. The first edition of this part was dedicated to Henry Gray, Duke of Suffolk, who however died before the book reached him. The second edition was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I

The title pages of three Icones volumes bear subtitles in Italian, French and German, probably because they were aimed at a larger market and at people who could not read Latin. The illustrations carry captions in all four languages
