For the u'fe of this teft, in the analyfis of waters, we are much in* debted to Dr. Black, profeiTor of chemiftry in the univerfity of Edinburgh, whofe experiments on calcareous earth and magnefia have fo much increafed our knowledge of the nature of fixed air, both in its feparate ftate, and when combined with other bodies, as alfo of the different degrees pf attraftion it has for various chemical bodies, that he has excited an ardour for new difcoveries, and thereby formed one of the moft brilliant epochs , in his fcience. We have reafon then to expeft, that the name of Black fhould always remain me- morable in the annals of chemiftry, and be hand- ed down to poflerity as long as the fcience itfelf fhall exift. Frpra his. experiments it is now known, that lime o-v^'es its. folubility in water to its being deprived of its aerial gas, know.n com- monly by the name of fixed air, and to poffefs the properties of an acid ; that if to this folution this gas. is. added, the lime is feparated and reaf- fumes. the form of chalk, which being infoluble in water falls to the bottom, and forms.the preci- pitate above-mentioned. He has proved that lime has a greater attra6lion for this air than for either the vegetable, foffil, or volatile alkalies. C 3 From
