    illuslratcd Uic lecture alluded to, the ///ly/nnortality districts are colored blue iu different shades, the deepest blue reproscntiug the highest death rate from this cause; whilst the districts, where this disease Avas comparatively scarce or heloio the average, were colored red iu different shades, the deepest red indicating the lowest mortality from consumption to every 10,000 of the popxilation living. l>y these means the map was shown to he divided into a series of well deiined groups of districts, appeal- ing to the eye at once, and showing at a glance, where the condi- tions of climate, physical geography, and social life, either favoured the development and extension of consumption, or cliecked the one and prevented the other. If we take the whole coast luie of England and Wales, we shall find as a rule, Avithout an exception, that the districts immediately under the pro- tective influence of high precipitous cliffs, liave a low death rate from Phthisis, Avhetlier they lie behind tlie cliff bound coast of ISTorth Devon, or those of Yorkshire; it is a fact however, that the largest group of the lowest mortality, is to be found on the coast of the North Eiding of Yorkshire; and the next largest in the South West of Devonshire, Avhere the physical conditions are similar. That precipitous cliffs do break the force of the winds in tliTi manner I have described Avas forcibly impressed on my muid many years ago, Avhilst on a visit at Eastbourne. One day Avhen it Avas bloAving a gale from the south Avest, I started from the beach near Sea Houses, (where I could hardly stand and Avith difficulty keep my hat on,) and Avalked up to the Coast Guard Station on the top of Leachey Head; Avlidst ascending I began to congratulate myself that the Avhid Avas lessening in force, as I had less and less difficulty in contend- ing Avith it as I approached the summit; on reaching the ilag-stalf I Avas surprised to find Avhat I thouglit Avas a sudden lull in the gale, for 1 was able to light a connnon vesta match and use it Avithout difficulty : at this time I Avas at some little distance from the over-hanging sunnuit; in a fcAV seconds hoAvever I Avas^standing on the very edge of the cliff, and on looking over it Avas astonished to find a tremendous current of air travelling iipwards, Avhich for a moment took away my breath, and blcAV my hat off instantly ; it fell, hoAvever, im- mediately behind me, and Avhilst picking it up was surprised
