Objervations on the Venereal Infection, and the different ap- pearances of Syphilitic Complaints in general. WE fay that a perfon is poxed, injured, or affeaed with the venereal difeafe, pox or bad diftemper*, when the venereal poifon has been received into the fyffem, and there produces its peculiar effefls. Thefe effects or fymptoms are ulcers of the mouth, fauces, and skin, cutaneous eruptions, tet- ters, pains and fwelling of the bones, &c. But as long as the effects of the poifon are confined tc the genitals, the diforderis not called a fyphilis, lues venerea, or pox ; but diftinguifhed by fome particular name, according to its different appearatices; fuch as gonorrhoea, lhancre, bubo, &c. Concerning the nature of the venereal poifon, we know no more than we do about that of the fmall pox, or any othar con- tagion ; we know only that it product*- fuch and fuch effefts, which yield to a particular mode of treatment. Like other con- tagions, it requires fome time after being applied to the human body, before it produces that fermentation (if I may be allowed the expreflion,) which bring) on the diforder.
