About this work

Description

Cerebral malaria: histopathology This image is a high power view of a section of white matter from the brain of a patient with cerebral malaria. It shows ischaemic lesions (pale zone) around a parasitized capillary. Other vessels seen in cross section are also parasitized. Vascular obstruction in cerebral malaria does not always lead to haemorrhage; often the vessel does not rupture, but the lack of blood flow through it is sufficient to cause ischaemic necrosis of the surrounding myelin. H&E stain.
