    In an old memorandnm book kept by one John Frisby, a Leicestershire man, between 1723 and i774» there are several interesting items of medical A Among his accounts for buying sheep and cows and garden produce, John inter- spersed some quaint medical recipes, of which the following is an example :— “ For ye bite of a mad dog.—Liver of a mad dog I ounce, ash-colour’d ground liver-wort 2 ounces, stones of raisons of ye sun ounce, white pepper 6 drachms, and in proportion for a small quantity. “Dry ’em separately in an oven, powder and mix ’em. The dose is 2 or 3 drachms roll’d up in butter, to be given in 24 or 48 hours after ye bite. The dog to be blooded all the same time. The ingredients to be kept dry, but not powder’d till used. To a man ye same dose, but must be given in 4 a pint of warm milk. Another is “ A receit for ye Agay, gave by me Ladey Jefford’s is steurd.—Take an ounce of Jesuit’s Bark pounded very fine, put it into a pint bottel, then put a glass of white wine into it and fill it up with barley water, shake it allewayes. When you take aney out, you may take three or four spoon fulls att a time, those days the party has not his fitt, and as the mixture grows thick you may put in moie barley water. The party must be three or four hours distance in taking it.” An interesting item is a list of prices paid for drugs and oils by John Frisby, which is quaintly headed—“ Prices of oyles & other and medicines in XVIII century lickwids. “ Spirits of Vitterill . Narva Oil 3d. per oz. Swallows Peter . . . • Exitter ...••• Spike as is cal’d, but is nothing but id. 2d. 2d. 2d. turpentine as they sell id.
