About this work
Observed at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road, London. The main surgeon stands on the far side, wielding a mallet to chip away the knee. The figure in green on the near side was a visiting American surgeon; he has a spot of the patient's blood on his shoe. Right a male nurse, left the anaesthetist. On the far wall, drawings of the hip joint, stuck there to explain the operation to students
