    PREFACE. The present Manual is, in a great mea- sure, merely an abridgment of Dr. Christi- son's elaborate Treatise on Poisons, already so advantageously known to the medical pro- fession of this country. But, considerable alterations having been freely made in the form of that treatise, it becomes necessary to assign the motives that have led to the of- fering of this substitute, in some respects, for the excellent work from which it has been compiled.
