About this work

Description

The original Guard Book has been split into 3 albums housed in separate boxes following remedial conservation work in 2003. Album 1 = pages 1-96; album 2 =97-180 ; album 3 = a small number of outsize items (where these were removed there is a page indicating 'outsize item').

The Guard Book primarily consists of printed material - Letters and applications from exhibition committees requesting Burroughs Wellcome & Co to contribute to the exhibitions - both by renting an exhibition space and/or guaranteeing funds. The Guard Book rarely contains copies of the replies, just copies of the organisers' literature. Not all exhibition offers were taken up by Burroughs Wellcome & Co and in many cases it is unclear whether Burroughs Wellcome & Co exhibited.

Includes copies of: Exhibition committee details; Guarantee fund details; Regulations for contributors; Details of prize/award competitions; Lists of Prize winners; Calls for applications for advertising in exhibition pamphlets; Prospectuses (proof and final) giving details of exhibitors - also indexes of exhibitors and stands; Transport details (for exhibits); Approved agents - for transportation and for exhibition cases; Notices confirming reservation of stands; Regulations for removal of exhibits.
