Description
Grenelle was host to the first Artesian well in the region of Paris, built in 1841, using waters from a depth of 348 m. (Larousse, 1983). In an Artesian well, "the water rises in a borehole by hydrostatic pressure from a basin whose outcrop is at a higher level" (Chambers twentieth century dictionary, 1981)
