Description

Transmission electron micrograph of herpes simplex virus particles in the nucleus of a corneal epithelial cell. Each particle contains the viral DNA surrounded by the protein coat. At this stage each particle is approximately 100 nanomatres in diameter. As these virus particles leave the nucleus they pick up a lipid bilayer envelope. They then pass in a vesicle to the cell surface where they bud off.
