The actual death-rate was 14-7 per 1000 persons, or corrected, as for purposes of comparison it should be, for local variations from the normal standard as regards age distribution, 15-7, while in England and Wales, generally, it was 16-6, that being by a con¬ siderable difference the lowest rate ever recorded. Table II. shows the rates of mortality during the several periods of infancy, youth, maturity, and old age. It will be observed that the conditions were especially favourable to the two first groups. Of the 309 children born, thirty-three or 107 per cent, died before completing a year of life. The corres¬ ponding proportion in the whole country was 137 ; and the difference affords, perhaps, the most trustworthy evidence of the good sanitary condition of the town. The mean age at death was forty years, ten months. The seven principal zymotic diseases account for ten deaths. This number is much below the average annual number in Windsor, and gives a rate of 0‘8 per thousand persons—less than half the corresponding rate for England and Wales. Diphtheria was notified in five cases, of which two were fatal; and one other death was attributed to croup. In none of these cases, with one doubtful exception, could the source of infection be discovered. It was pretty clear that the disease was not communicated by personal contagion, and the premises at which the cases occurred were all in good or fair sanitary condition.
