    SECTION B - GENERAL PROVISIONS OF HEALTH SERVICES FOR THE AREA * Laboratory facilities are available at the Laboratories of the Derbyshire County Council at Derby. AMBULANCE FACILITIES. Infectious Diseases. One Ambulance provided by the Isolation Hospital at Chinley. Non-Infectious Cases and Maternity Cases. Two Ambulance vehicles and one driver maintained by Voluntary Public Subscriptions. S tyriri: uV-V 1. ON r\ - SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA WATER. (1) The quantity has been sufficient. There is need for Improvement in the quality, the results of analyses pointing to some failure in filtration at Ball Beard and contamination occurring during the distribution both from the Ball Beard and Lowleighton supplies, presumably from ball hydrants. (2) Samples for bacteriological examination were taken on six occasions, and on four of these occasions samples for ch/mical examination were also taken. (Tables of results are appended). From the results of these examinations,, it Is evident that the filters of the Ball Beard supply foiled to function adequately on three occasions during both wet and dry weather, but especially so during a wet period (18*10.44); They also show that when results were good at the outlet of the Filters, the supply which reached the consumers, both from Ball Beard (18.12.44) and Lowleighton (18.10.44 and 18*12*44) was unsatisfactory. The chemical results were good with certain exceptions, notably the samples taken at Ball Beard (18*10 v-»44 and 18al2344) but also show on the whole, that the water was too hard, the supply from Moorlands giving the best results in this respect. This supply is, however, affected by the inclusion in it of a harder water pumped from the Ball Beard supply. The adoption of a softening process is strongly indicated. (3) The Soda-Ash process is applied to both Ball Board and Lowleighton but not to Moorlands* As already mentioned the last named supply is augmented by inclusion of water from the Ball Beard supply, especially during dry periods. Lead has not been found in any of tho samples examined chemically, but the action on lead (after exposure for 24 hours) is shown in the tables. (4) Chlorination is carried out on both Ball Beard and^ Lowleighton supplies. The process has unfortunately, at times, been inoperable because of breakdowns which could not be readily repaired during war conditions* (5) 89$ of the dwelling houses and 89$ of the population of the district are supplied with water direct to each houses There are no stand-pipes * DRAINAGE AND SEWAGE. No alterations or extensions have taken place during the year*
