Hair cells in the organ of Corti

A scanning electron microscope image of the Organ of Corti, which forms part of the cochlea in the inner ear. This organ (of a guinea pig, in this case) contains rows of inner and outer hair cells. Vibrations made by sound cause the hairs of these cells to move back and forth, sending impulses via the auditory nerve to the brain.
