About this work

Description

This is the story of Dr. William Langston's 1982 attempt to use L-Dopa to treat a number of Californian patients who had become "frozen" as a result of illegal drug use. At first beneficial, L-Dopa's effects on these patients became so disturbing as to render it unsafe to use, whereupon a revolutionary form of brain-cell implant neurosurgery was tried. The film continues the L-Dopa story recounted so dramatically in "Awakenings". A sequel is planned to follow up the results of the brain-cell implants, a treatment which may also be appropriate for sufferers from Parkinson's disease, an illness to which the "frozen addicts'" symptoms bear many resemblances.
