Description
A cord soaked in the blood of a viper which, when worn around the neck was supposed to keep the bearer safe from mumps (Kehlsucht). The cord came wrapped in a folded sheet of paper with instructions, printed in black and sealed with red wax. A circular wood engraving is above the text showing a holy man on a cloud with a halo and a pennant with a cross on it. The leaflet gives Hyeronimus Mantovani, an apothecary of Venice as the maker, but this has been overprinted with the name of Girolamo Mantovani. This may be the italian equivalent or somebody else who took over the business.
