About this work

Description

Collection of cookery and medical receipts compiled by an unidentified author with the initials J A (f.22r.).

The main body of the text is in a single, formal later 17th-century hand. There are later entries in a variety of hands towards the end of the volume.

There may be a connection with the Worcestershire area: 'this is Mrs Parishes receipt of the Red Lion in Brandford' [?Bransford, Worcs.] (f.68r.).

Among several authorities are 'Lady Burdett' (f. 14r.), 'Dr Rant' (f. 23r.), the Countess of Chesterfield (f. 30r.), 'Doctor Burges' (f. 31r.), 'Lady Fitzwilliam' (f. 45r.), 'Dr Whatman' (ff. 63r., 76r.), 'Lady Gerrard' (f. 69r.), Sir William Coventry [1628?-1686] (f. 69v.), and the Duke of Monmouth [James Scott (1649-1685), Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch] (f. 73v.).

1 vol., 185 x 150 mm., 82 ff. (original foliation 1-49, 51-56 and unnumbered). Table of contents (f. 1).
