    The advantages refulting from the reception and publication of Communications are many and indifputable. Science, in general, is ad¬ vanced by the correfpondence of the learned and ingenious. Errors are thereby difcovered and juft principles attained. Even an acquaintance with the unfuccefsful attempts of others, joined to an examination into the caufes of their failure, often leads us to a happier practice. Still more beneficial muft the communications of fuch fuc- cefsful cafes be, as conduce the more to the public good in proportion as they are known. Having thus fpoken to the merits of our in- ftitution, and explained the plan of this publi¬ cation, gratitude demands an acknowledgment of the fupport we have received. The clergy in particular merit our thanks, whether we confider their readinefs to preach for this Society, their zeal and ability in preaching, or the fuccefs which has crowned their benevo¬ lent labours. To their exertions may principal¬ ly be attributed the prefent exiftence of the in- ftitution. It is with regret that we are obliged to obferve, that the number of annual or other private fubfcriptions, would have been inade¬ quate to defray the expences necefiarily attendant on fuch a plan. It muft therefore have been to¬ tally
