About this work

Description

This image shows the area of the brain that is active during voluntary action. The area highlighted in red is the pre-supplementary motor area - a key node for voluntary action. This area was active during eye movements by the subject. The functional aspect of the image is obtained through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and super imposed over a structural MRI. A special kind of volume rendering is applied to the data to show the brain in its wider anatomical context. The head and eye were chosen to emphasise the connection with the eye, the movements of which were associated with the activation of the brain.
