    ADDRESS. Mr. President and Gentlemen of the Suffolk District Medical Society. In compliance witli the request which your Committee has done me the honor to make, I ap- pear before you this evening, to occupy your atten- tion for an hour, with the address which our rules direct should he annually delivered by one of our members. In the choice of a subject, I have been guided by the knowledge that I was about to speak to a collection of practical medical men, feeling the importance of the profession to which they have dedicated their lives, and a consequent interest in the progress of the science upon which it is de- pendent. In addressing such a body of gentlemen, I have thought that it would not be out of place to vindi- cate before them their claims to be considered as the professors of a real science, to show to them the path which must be followed to advance this science, and to comment in some few words upon the ten- dency of investigation at the present time, the re- sults of which must necessarily have more or less bearing upon the practice of the art.
