About this work

Description

Episodes described in the poem Das Lied von der Glocke by Friedrich Schiller. At the foot is the master founder with a big bell named Concordia, and three Latin mottos expressing its functions (the epigraph to the poem): Vivos voco, Mortuos plango, Fulgura frango (The living I call, the dead I lament, the lightening I break). Along the top are three scenes marking the cardinal events of life at which the bell is rung: a marriage, the baptism of a child, and a funeral. On the left side, below marriage, are two other happy episodes: a woman looks after the home while her husband goes out to do business, and people enjoy a peaceful and joyful evening at harvest time. On the right side, below the funeral, are two other unhappy events: fire damages a town, and war, revolution and civil violence overtake a nation
