About this work

Description

An engraving in honour of Nicaise Lefèvre, or Nicasius Faber (1610-1669), chemist and teacher of chemistry at the Jardin du Roi; Royal Professor of Chymistry and Apothecary-in-General to the Royal Household in England, and one of the original members of the Royal Society. The elaborate rococo border was engraved to allow the small (12mo) portraits to be published in a larger (4to) volume (Pognon and Bruand, loc. cit.)

According to the titlepage of Savérien, op. cit., the portraits are engraved by Jean-Charles Francois, but according to Pognon and Bruand (op. cit. p. 331) the portraits after vol. VI are not by François: they do not bear his signature or initials, and are not in his characteristic crayon-manner technique. The present tribute to Lefevre would appear to be one of these allegorical compositions
