    It may be deserving of your consideration, whetlwar this may not be the proper time to introduce sorae changes into the constitution of the Faculty, strictly Medical ? Whether, for example, the duties at preserft performed by the Professor of the Theory of Medicine, should not be assigned to two distinct Professors -sit least—Physiology to one, and Pathology to another? The discoveries which have been made, and which .are daily making in each of these branches of medicine, arfi of such extent and importance, as to render it quite impossible, it is conceived, for any Professox*, whatever his talents and assiduity may be, to give a sufficient a,c~ count of either of them, in a period shorter than thai which is allotted to the courses of medical lectures in the University of Edinburgh. It may be worthy of your consideration, also, whether Surgery, a branch of so _great extent and importance^ should not be taught by a distinct Professor, and tlialt Professor a practical Surgeon ?—whether lectures o» Clinical Surgery be of less importance to the great majority of those who receive medical degrees in *ke University of Edinburgh, than lectures upon Clinicii Medicine ;—and whether the course of Medical Juris- prudence should not be added—as that of Midwifery has lately very properly been, to those Classes, an atten- dance upon which is necessary for graduation? In judging of the preparatory and professional branch- es of knowledge which students should possess on whom medical degrees are conferred by your University, it may be proper for you to inquire into the regulations
