    There was also an increase in the number of cases of Enteric Fever. Of the whole number (18), the great majority of the cases (14) were notified in the second half of the year. 'In every case of Enteric Fever the pail system was adopted in order to render the discharges innocuous as regards infection. From the table given under it will be noticed that the number of deaths due to the chief Zymotic Diseases in 1897 is less than the number recorded for the previous year, although the number of infectious cases notified during the year was much greater than in 1896. This may be taken as evidence of the mild character of the epidemic.
